Why so many cafes in Korea?

One day some of my foreign friends asked me why South Korea had so many cafes in the street.

Ahh that is very true. We do have cafe every corner. And that good question gave me a chance to look into the situation.

Before i start, i wanna ask one question.
What do you do when you meet your friend?? Where do you meet your friends when you hang out??

I think cafe offers two big things to Korean people now.
First one is nice and good coffee and moment of rest. Second one is a nice place for conversation with friends.

Couple of decades ago, Korean people didnt drink Americano coffee. We did and still do drink coffee with sugar and prim which is called "Mix coffee" in Korea. Its super sweet and keeps you awake and also cheep. So many workers drank it after lunch from vending machine. Then one day we got to know the coffee, americano. I think the start was Starbucks. I dont know exact history.

The point is that definition of coffee is changed a lot. It was only for caffeine to keep awake. But now so many people enjoy coffee itself and consider it as a rest and short break in the middle of crazy life.

And second is that cafe gives you a place to sit and take your time. At first we just had coffee there talking but today we study there or read a book and do whatever we want to do unless it bothers other people. Cafe is also evolving. They develop new menu more.

This blue lemon ade was hit last summer.

Korea people enjoy cafe itself i think. Every day more and more cafes are showing up in the street. Competition is getting harsh in this business but still lots of people wanna open their own cafe. And so do i ;)

I feel like coffee is becoming part of our life and culture. There is very famous cafe town. And someone wrote about cafe trip book too!

These are all my personal opinion. I will do more research and post real history about cafe and coffee in korea one day. There are so many things to talk!

Ah we even had one drama with cafe background. Thanks to the handsome main actor, it was really popular and helped have coffee known in korea ;)
